Q&A

Q. “What is your branding statement?”

A.  Suzan E. Zan is an author unafraid to tackle emotional issues, mix in snark, and reflect on herself and society.

Q. “What inspired you to write Overcoming the Underhanded: The True Story to a Life Reclaimed?”

A.  I’ve always journaled but used it as therapy during my divorce; plus documented for the courts. It’s my story on some of the crazy things my ex said and did.

Q.  “Was it difficult for you to relive/write it?”

A.  Parts of it yes, especially from the perspective of what our children went through. While writing was therapeutic publishing it required a great deal of courage, promoting and speaking about it even more so. It exposed the wounds I kept secret—that so many keep secret.

Q. “On such a personal and serious topic, why did you inject humor?”

A.  I love laughing and making others laugh so I mixed in humor with the hurt.

Q. “Who is your main target audience?”

A. Anyone with a heart, who feels alone, has felt unworthy or taken advantage of, someone who likes a happy ending.

Q.  “Why write?”

A.  I write to heal and encourage and hope I help rekindle broken and bruised hearts. Many women have shared a slice of their own life with me and have thanked me for writing mine. That’s priceless and humbling. God did not create us to live in fear and intimidation or to live life as a “less than.” I write to let others know they are not alone.

Q. “How do you get yourself in the mood to write?”

A. A well-caffeinated Suzan is the first step. I’m also partial to peppermint oil aromatherapy.

Q. “What’s next?”

A. My poetry collection, From Suffering to Salve: My Journey to Happiness, will be published in April by Turtle Cove Press. I am also working on my memoir as an adoptee recently reunited with my birthfather.
